BuiltNY - Wine Ratchet Magnum
The folks at Built NY want you to have more pop in your wine. And to work harder for it. Calling newfangled corkscrew designs intended to silently ease corks from wine bottles a travesty, the company has introduced the Wine Ratchet Magnum, a heavyweight opener guaranteed to produce a loud "Pop!"

The Magnum, which sports an unusual (and oddly sensual) liquid metallic look and shape, literally ratchets into the cork. It then relies on your brute strength to twist and pull the cork from the bottle. ("Levers are for sissies," the manual says.)

The device comes with two screwbits, a 2-inch version for older, longer corks and a 1 1/2-inch bit for newer, shorter corks. This is a nice idea, but it's easy to imagine misplacing these in crowded kitchen drawers.

The Magnum also has a hook-style foil cutter concealed within the handle. Also a nice idea, though the slick chrome the corkscrew is crafted from can make it difficult to open.

Despite its reliance on personal oomph to get the cork out, the Magnum was simple to use, attractive enough to be a conversation piece and (true to its sales pitch) produced a loud pop.
